What is Flash?:

Flash, or, officially known as Adobe Flash is (well, was since its pretty much dead) a software program where one could make animations, apps, video players, and even games with said software.

Content on this page requires a newer version of Adobe Flash Player.

Flash Culture:

Back then, flash played a big role in the internet. Nowadays, it’s pretty much dead. Gone are the days of making thrilling, funny, violent animations, while constantly yelling incoherent inappropriate jokes that would appeal to the average 14 year old. The days of browsing through the /f/ board on 4chan, or whole websites such as Newgrounds or Albino Blacksheep have sadly, disappeared (for the most part). Where animators such as Egoraptor, Oney, Harry Partridge, and many more once reigned supreme through the interwebs, they have (mostly) now gone dormant. Nowadays, most sites that had a great flash community barely have the same amount of visits that they once used to drown in. But back then, flash was a tool of entertainment; to show off talent in the most creative ways. Even if it was something so nonsensically stupid, it still had value since it appealed to people and gave them a good time. Although the death of animation can be largely directed at YouTube’s algorithm (or just YouTube in general) changing everything up for the worse for animators. Back then, animations were the bread and butter of many childhoods. Look, i know i’m pretty much repeating myself at this point but to brutally summarize it all up in one sentence: Flash was one of the best things to ever be a part of the Internet.

Flash Games:

Oh, by the way, many people even made flash games! I don’t know about you but, when i was a child, i used to play flash games all the time (I was naive and too young to realize you could just download games on steam but, whatever). Flash games were there for you if you didn’t know you could download games on the computer or because you parents thought it would “Bring viruses to the PC”. Either way, most of them were fun, some of them were trash, although they still served as a great distraction for most of us.

Couple o' flash games

Runescape

Although technically not Flash (it runs via java), this is still one game we need to talk about. Being important to those who grew up in the 2000’s, Runescape was the most fun many people would have for hours during middle school. The fact that you could play an MMO in flash within an internet browser was amazing back then. Playing as many classes and wasting time with friends was all kids ever needed with Runescape.

Henry Stickmin

YES! The amazing, dashing, lucky stickman himself! Saving all of us with laughter by comical scenarios full of classic vidya references and entertaining outcomes. MAN, do I love this series. With its start in 2008, the Henry Stickmin series follows Henry Stickmin, a stickman who gets into all crazy types of scenarios. From trying to break into a bank to infiltrating an airship. Sure, the games can be considered short, yet that doesn’t matter since the later the game is, the more content it will include. And besides, who doesn’t love Henry? He may be silent, yet there are many vidya protagonists who are silent (and anyway he is a master of silent comedy). Overall, The Henry Stickmin games were all awesome games that- in my opinion- are one of the best flash game series of the internet.

Fancy Pants Adventures

With its impressive, fluent animation (that still astonishes to this day), Fancy Pants adventures surprised the internet with its gameplay and animation being so- perfect. Fancy Pants’ movements always had momentum, some of the levels were challenging and although the gameplay was mainly just some sonic clone, it was still amazing for a flash game to be this precise (especially for 2006). In 2008, Fancy pants 2 came out although, it was very laggy (most likely not at first though, as evidenced by Fancy pants 2 having 22 million plays on armor games while The original only had 14 million). Overall, Fancy pants was a very memorable flash game back then.

Super Smash Flash

It's exactly what it sounds like. A flash port mixed with various super smash bros elements; borrowing from all games (mainly melee). Though, it’s not called the most famous super smash bros fan game on the internet without a reason. Not only including some of the original cast of the super smash bros games but also characters that the fans have been wanting to be introduced into the series for years. Being released in 2006, this game was pretty popular, but it's far superior sequel is what made the fangame “franchise” so popular. Being revamped and having an update that took 3 years to make, Super Smash Flash 2 astonished the internet with how balanced and fun this game was- especially for the fact that it’s all in flash!
